If you find yourself sat at the kitchen table eating your morning cornflakes with an umbrella over your head or you’ve come downstairs to find that you have a brand new paddling pool in the front room that you never ordered chances are pretty high you have a serious leaking pipe problem.

Leak(1)Early discovery of a water leak can save your home or business from serious water damage and costs in billing and repair. There are many indicators of leakage which should not be ignored. As soon as they are found, it’s time to act. Calling a Plumber is the first step. A professional will be able to fully diagnose the severity of the problem and quickly develop a strategy that will keep you and your property safe.

Look out for the warning signs of leaks:

A distant sound of water running – Although telling your guests you have a ghost who likes to make water sounds from beyond the grave is much more exciting, telling a plumber you have a leak is far more practical. The walls of your house are filled with various pipes and the distant quality of the sound is most likely due to the hollow space that the leaking pipe occupies. Call the Plumber then get to work trying to pinpoint where the sounds originates from.

Damp patches or erosion – The constant flow of even small droplets from a leaking pipe can quickly lead to a big problem. Have you noticed a new stain on the wall, ceiling or floor? Damp, once it starts, can be hard to stop and it will quickly affect the atmosphere in the effected room. You may find the room colder, smelly and dirty. Pools of moisture are breeding grounds for bacteria and fungi.

Slow dripping – Probably the most obvious of warning signs the slow dripping of water through the wall or ceiling. Grab a bucket and get it under that drip before calling the Plumber, don’t delay as that water is coming right off your water bill.

A smell not un-similar to a wet dog – If you’ve had a shower and you still smell a musty odour in the air of a particular room it may indicate a hidden area of damp caused by a leak. Only a professional will be able to hunt the origin of the smell effectively.
A water bill that’s higher than usual – Unfortunately, you only discover leaks this way once it is already too late! An increased water bill can be quite a shock but, in fact, it may be the one thing that prevents further disaster! Call a plumber to investigate the leak.
